BACKGROUND OF THE ACSS

The use of fibre composites structures has become an increasingly important factor in engineering design. Composites of high performance fibres and a range of polymeric, metallic or ceramic matrix materials have enabled many engineering achievements. Advanced fibre reinforced plastics in particular, have been extensively used in the aerospace industry for structural components in both military and commercial aircraft.

Composite structures are becoming increasingly more significant in a number of engineering fields. Many high performance yachts and small naval vessels are fabricated from composite materials and more uses are progressively being developed in general engineering. Significant developments have been achieved in the materials and fabrication technologies for a range of structural components. The potential for wider application of composites has been enhanced in recent years through many innovations in the fibre pre-forms, matrix materials and manufacturing processes.

Australia has a developing composites industry which is supported by commercial, government and university research organisations, as well through international collaboration. To facilitate discussion of ideas and developments in composite materials, the Australian Composite Structures Society, a technical society within The Institution of Engineers, Australia, was founded in December 1992.
